To add messages to exceptions on do not disturb mode tap on messages from and select all if you want to or select favorites contacts or probably select contacts only. Im not aware of any way to do this at this time unless there is something specific to the app for silent mode that I am not aware of such as how the alarm will still sound if the device is on silent.
